Cretan Dakos - Nostos Goods

Cretan Dakos

Cretan Dakos

Cretan Dakos, also known as "koukouvagia" in Crete, is a traditional Greek dish that epitomizes the simplicity and healthfulness of Mediterranean cuisine. This rustic salad features crunchy barley rusks as the base, topped with ripe tomatoes, tangy feta cheese, and briny olives. The star of the dish is Argilos EVOO I (Early), whose fresh and grassy notes enhance the flavors of every ingredient. Dakos is a perfect appetizer or light meal, embodying the spirit of Crete with its reliance on fresh, wholesome ingredients and unpretentious preparation. Historically, barley rusks were a practical solution for preserving bread in hot, dry climates, making them a staple in the Cretan diet for centuries. Today, this dish serves as a delightful reminder of the island's culinary heritage.
